SOHA sneak peak.

A couple weeks ago, I was contacted by the amazing Natalie, stylist and fashion blogger behind Sequined Silver Lining.  She asked if I would be interested in modeling for SOHA, an upcoming runway show in March, and I couldn’t say “YES!” fast enough.  Not only did I want to be involved in the show, but I couldn’t wait to work with Natalie again.  I could go on and on about how beautiful, kind, and talented she is, but instead I will just leave it up to you to check out her site and soak up the awesomeness.  To see the previous shoot we were both involved in, along with Lovestruck Event’s Candace Kalasky, clickhere.  Ps. Candace is also equally wonderful.

SOHA stands for “Style Omaha, Help All”.  The runway show is being held in order to raise money for a charity called Abide Network and is showcasing various boutiques in Omaha.  March 31st at the House of Loom, 8pm.  Be there or be square! But seriously, be there :) It’s only five dollars.

Oh, and have I mentioned how fantastic Omaha is?  Apparently I must have been walking around with my eyes closed before (aka pining over San Diego).  This city is just buzzing with life and only getting better.  There are so many beautiful and talented people here, I hope I never stop meeting them.

Here are a couple photos from the promo shoot we did last weekend.  I was so honored to have worn this color-block masterpiece from Piper Boutique.  And the jewelry?  Don’t get me started, I loved it all.  If you haven’t already been to Piper in Regency, you need to stop by and experience the magic.  It is a lovely little place and I guarantee you won’t leave empty handed.

love love love,

new babies and boyfriends.

Some may say it’s odd, but I can’t wait to be a mom.  I used to tell everyone that’s what I wanted to be when I grow up.

Seriously.  And even to this day, I can’t wait.  I don’t know when it will happen and I am in no way trying to rush the process but I’m just really excited for the journey.

Anywho — all this baby talk has come about due to a baby shower us Urban girls hosted for our friend, Jerica.  We have worked with her for close to a year now and she is such a delight to be around.  If baby Margot is anything like her, she’s going to be a hoot!  We can’t wait to meet her.

Even more exciting though, was thrifting for her baby!  (here’s a secret: i would LOVE to own a store that carried strictly vintage/thrifted children’s clothing)  The moment I found out we were doing a shower for Jerica, I knew I was going to Second Chance in the Old Market to find a gem for her sweet girl.  I also made a trip to the Council Bluffs Salvation Army where they have the best children’s section EVER.

Here’s another not so secret to those who know me: If I find something amazing for a baby and have no one to gift it too, chances are I will keep it for the baby I hope to have one day :) weird? yeah, a little.  But hey, if I do ever end up opening that store of mine, I’ll already have a great head start!

Haters gonna hate!

I’ve been saying that a lot lately, I think it’s funny.

Anyway, here are a few pics from the shower —

Oh, and by the way.. meet my new boyfriend.  His name is Van.  Son to my wonderful friend and boss, Missy. (We had the shower at her AMAZING house) He was giving me the eyes all night and told me I looked liked Minnie Mouse.  Needless to say we are in love.

He’s flirting.

Beautiful Jerica!

Van the Man.

hair bow.

I haven’t done an outfit post in awhile .. so here we go.

What I wore to work:

Check out my hair bow.  I can’t take credit for it for real because it was kind of an accident actually.  My intention was to do a big top bun but somewhere along the way it started to “mess up” and it ended up turning into this.  I don’t hate it.  It makes me feel like Minnie Mouse a little.

You are getting a small glimpse into the break room of Urban Outfitters in these photos.  Tread lightly .. for it is a magical place :) Seriously though, we just got this new oversized sofa chair and it is the bee’s knees.  I took a short snooze on it today and it was glorious.

So what am I wearing?

Colorblock Dance Leotard: American Apparel via Scout
Black Cardigan: Forever 21 via Scout
Printed Shorts: Urban Outfitters
Colored Tights: probably Target
Teal Plimsolls: Urban Outfitters

I hope your day is as colorful as my outfit.

buzzz zz zzz z

See that? I’m a bee . A busy bee!

Seriously though, where the heck did January go?  Oh, Hi February, what’s up.

I love it though. I LOVE being busy.  I love having something to do, or practice, or cook, or read, or send.  Places to be, people to meet, relationships to build.

It’s a lot.  But it makes the days when you do have nothing to do, or the hours of free time that come along seem even better.  It makes it that much more appreciated and enjoyable.

For me at least :)

Having said that, I am treating myself to a vacation in April that I know will be much appreciated when the time comes.  San Diego, of course! Where a part of my heart will always live.

My plane ticket and Kelly Clarkson concert tickets for when I’m there are already purchased, ready to go!  This is part vacation, part birthday present to my dearest friend in San Diego.

But wait, what about my Spending Fast, right?  Right.  It’s still going, and going strong.  However, gifts were always in my list of things I can still spend money on.  Why? Because I LOVE gifts.  I love giving them more than I do receiving.  It’s just fun for me.  Even more so, I love carrying out traditions and making new memories based on ones experienced long ago.  So for my friend and I, Kelly Clarkson represents the best and worst times of our High School Adventure in San Diego.  It’s special to us, and that matters more to me than money.  And yes, seriously, I love Kelly Clarkson. Nerd alert!

So besides that, what else do I have to look forward too in the coming months?

-Modeling/Runway shoots with some very talented people in Omaha.
-Working more closely with Courtney of InezGill to update her site and more photo shoots.
-Spring floorset at Urban.
-Babies being born!
-Birthdays.
-Baptism.
-Church Retreats.
-Late Night Design Group at CAMP

and more to come, I’m sure :)

What have I been up too in the meantime?

— Making Stuff :) The first photo I took at the Creation Station on 84th and Giles.  It’s a place where you can pick out pieces of pottery and paint something wonderful.  I made a food and water dish for my precious kitty.  The second photo is a Valentine Bag I made at work.  Beyonce<3

— Cooking! This is new for me.  But I like it, and I only want to do more!

— Dressing up!  Being on this Spending Fast and NOT thrifting or shopping has made me actually utilize the wardrobe I have and try new things.  It’s fun :)

— Piano Lessons.  Seriously, it’s happening.  My talented and kind friend offered to teach me for free.  How could I say no?

— Being Happy. and content. and patient. :)

January 13, 2012
2 weeks on my Spending Fast &still going strong.

Who knew this shopaholic had self-control?  I’m not going to say that this is easy, but it is not as hard as I expected.

“But what about your social life?” Is what everyone keeps asking.  Let me explain.

Movies:
A. There is a certain theatre where I know certain people that let me in for free.

Going out to Eat:
A. bring something with me from home
B. eat beforehand

Going to the Bar:
A. I don’t go to the bar that often, and when I do, I rarely drink anyway.  And if I want a pop or something, bartenders usually give those away for free because they assume you are the DD.
                B. If I do end up wanting a drink, i’ll just talk to the right guy, bat my eyelashes, and he’ll buy one for me.

Shows/Concerts/Dance Parties:
A. Get on the List
B. Some venues offer free admission if you get there by a certain time and if you are not a minor.

In most of these scenarios, bringing the party, dinner, and/or movie to my own home or the home of a friend is totally an option anyway!

Saving money is definitely my new favorite thing to do.  I am learning so much about myself and my priorities.  I’ve even started looking into coupons which is awesome and scary at the same time.  I’m so excited to be done with my fast, not because I want to spend like crazy again, but because I want to live my new debt-free life!  The idea of owning items without any pending payments or interest sounds like the best thing ever.

Now, to go a little more in depth about my goal ..

Every month I pay $289.25 towards my car payment.  (plus the $50, at least, i’m paying in interest)

I get paid twice a month, sometimes three depending on how the Thursdays fall.  What I am doing to make my goal is pretty simple.  Once I get paid, I pay the bills I have, and the rest of the money just sits in my account.  Once my next paycheck rolls around, I take all the remainder of my previous paycheck and make an additional payment towards my car. Repeat every paycheck.

This past and first two weeks of my fast was a special situation, though.  I had been saving up money every month the past 6 months because I was planning on moving to San Diego in February.  Well, plans changed, and I’m not moving anymore.

So, what to do with all this money I had saved up?  The old before the fast me would have gone on the most massive shopping/thrifting trip in the world.  However, my moving plans having been changed was a huge blessing in disguise, because what better way to start off my spending fast then this?  To have a huge amount of money at my disposal and actually do something responsible with it.

Long story (a little) bit shorter .. *drum roll* my first additional payment I made towards my car for the first 2 weeks of my spending fast was $1,000.

Seriously.

There are no words to describe the feeling of making that payment.

Not only did it give me the confidence boost I needed, but my original goal was to get my car payed off in a year, but get real, I’m getting it paid off in 6 months (most likely 7 months, but I’m gonna tell myself 6).

Can you tell I’m excited about this?

Cherry on top: I have two savings accounts that grow on a monthly basis so I have a nice cushion in case of emergencies.

I have never felt so in control of my finances and let me tell you, it is a magical feeling.

Holla fo a dolla,
Dani.

January 1, 2012
2012.

here it is.

a new year.

I’m not going to say that my New Years Resolution is to work out and start eating healthier, because isn’t that everybody’s?  Besides, I need to do that for my life and my body overall, not just for the year.  Seriously, I had cookies and beef jerky for dinner tonight.

I am going to do something big though.  Something I have been thinking about for awhile.  I have committed myself to a Spending Fast. I am actually going on Day 4 as of now.  It has been okay so far, not as hard as I expected.  However, it hasn’t even been a week so we’ll see how far my foot is in my mouth later.

The inspiration came from a wonderful lady in charge of an amazing blog called, And Then She Saved.  If you haven’t read it, you are missing out.  Whether you are thrifty or not, it offers great tips, tricks, and ideas for everyday life. It gives a wonderful new perspective on areas in my life that I have learned to greatly appreciate.  Especially in the area of my finances. It’s no secret that I love to shop. I mean, hello, most of this blog is about my thrifting adventures. I know what you are thinking, thrifting can’t be expensive, because it’s at the thrift store, right? Wrong. When you do it on a constant basis, it adds up, TRUST me. Plus, I work in retail. There’s the cherry on top of that shopping addiction. Oh and p.s.. retail therapy is real. Whether you think so or not, how many times have you ended up with a new pair of shoes when you are sad? In my case, I usually end up with a new pair of shoes no matter what emotion I’m feeling.

Long story short, I need to get my priorities straight! I have been paying off my car for the past three years.  At the rate I am going and the payments I am making, I won’t have it paid off until 2014. WHAT. That seems like forever. Not to mention that the interest is ONLY growing.  To think that I could have had my car paid off by now if I had chosen to put all my money towards that instead of sushi, shoes, and Starbucks is a little frustrating.  And I only have myself to blame.  So it’s time to make the change!

The Goal: To pay off my car by the end of the year.  As of now, that amount is $8,125.49 (not including interest).

How I’m Going to Do it: I have made a list of Wants and Needs. My money will be spent on Needs alone, a few of which are obviously things not considered an actual need but is something important to my life.

What I will Spend my Money On:

 Groceries

Hygiene Products

Doctor/Dentist Co-pays and prescriptions

Gas

Tithe/Mission Donations

Birthday/Holiday Gifts (in the thriftiest way)

Bills

Post Office

Darcie

What I won’t Spend my Money On:

 Coffee

Candy

Ice Cream

Food and/or Drinks at Restaurants

Movies

Music

Gym membership (base gym for free)

Clothes (only trade or use store credit at Scout)

Thrifting (wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh)

Covers

Shoes (ouch)

iPhone apps

Hair/wax treatments

Make-up (unless I completely run out)

Books (I have SO many unread books, I absolutely don’t need any more)

Once again, this list isn’t completely conclusive. A lot of things will be dealt with as they come. However, I plan on taking this very serious and I already feel the excitement to save!

Why: Why the heck not?! Seriously guys, I do NOT need any more shoes! It’s insane over here in my closet.

Raise your hand if you think I’m nuts!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Love,
Dani.

December 31, 2011
alley cat strike.

Did anyone ever watch that movie on Disney?  It was a good one.

This past Wednesday, West Lanes Bowling Alley had the privilege of hosting our annual Urban Outfitters Holiday party.  And by party I mean, a secret santa exchange, bike raffle, popcorn, and multiple pairs of velcro shoes.  It was great! Check out the babes I work with.

I was so excited I’m sleeping.

Seriously though, it was so fun.  These kooks make me laugh so hard it hurts.

I have to make a quick little shout out to my handsome friend, Josh, winner of the 2012 Spread the Love Matrix Campaign.  Not only do his nimble fingers make magic in your hair, but his quirky personality and edgy style make him one of the most awesome people I know.  I’m so, so proud of him!

Leslie again! Check out her sweeeeet pants. Bah! They are so good.

My Bowling Attire:

Weird 70’s clown shirt: Urban Renewal Vintage
Green Jeans: Thrifted in San Diego
Red Camp Socks: Urban Outfitters
Velcro Shoes: West Lanes Bowling Alley

I got at least 3 strikes that night!

love,
dani.
